Fast upgrade to the current 7th edition (December 2020)

Main focus

  • Familiarization with the differences from the 6th to the current 7th edition (for engineers and designers with sound knowledge of the 6th edition of the FKM guideline)
    • Revision of the material characteristics
    • Strength of aluminum materials
    • IIW recommendation for the FAT classes
    • Changes to the form and notch coefficients
  • Understanding the background to the changes
  • Better utilization of the material's resilience
  • Verification using concrete examples

On the subject

In December 2020, the current 7th edition of the FKM guideline "Computational strength verification for mechanical engineering components" was published as a recognized standard for static and dynamic strength verification. The extended consideration of support number concepts and protective layer influences makes the verifications even more practical for widely used materials in mechanical engineering. Complex contents for the realistic representation of actual strength values, such as hardening factors and a more precise analysis of the tolerable local strains of the material, now offer the possibility of considering component strengths for specific applications to a greater extent than general, theoretical strength values from material tables can reflect.

The update to the 7th edition is intended to ensure that future verifications are carried out according to the current state of the art.

Objective

In this seminar, you will learn about the handling and influence of technological developments within the directive. In addition to the theory of verification, the seminar also deals with the application of the guideline using practical examples, in which questions also arise for the user outside the actual guideline. Learn how to build the right bridge between stress determination in the finite element system and the FKM calculation.

The technical background to the formula changes will be discussed to enable you to handle calculation results and interact with your end customers with confidence in the future.

Contents

  • Overview of changes to the 7th edition
  • Adjustments to the calculation of the technological size effect
  • Extension of the calculation for the plastic support number
  • Consideration of the solidification factor
  • Updated material data and new material group
  • Integration of post-weld treatments
  • Changes in the Haigh diagram and the maximum amplitude
  • Presentation of amplitude and equivalent voltage verification
  • New interpretation of tolerable elongation
  • Protective coating factors for steel
  • New support number calculation for aluminum casting
  • New approach to evaluating welded components with notch and effective stresses
  • Change in temperature influence
  • Conclusion on internal investigations in the practical application of the new directive

Target group

Engineers and specialists from the fields of development, design and calculation, teachers from educational institutions, experts from research institutions and testing companies.

Please note: The seminar focuses on a quick update of the participants in dealing with the differences to the current guideline. In order to understand the seminar content, a sound knowledge of the FKM guideline and its application is required. We impart this specialist knowledge in the two-day online seminar "Strength verification of machine components according to the FKM guideline".
